With 2 strong new songs and the success of the Mean Fiddler showcase behind us, Slag Munky were ready to take on Croydon. After arriving early and having a little confusion with the drums, the equiptment was eventually set up and was ready for the first band.
It wasn't until about 3 hours later that we actually soundchecked and were due to play, which meant many people had to leave during our set to catch the last train. However, we came on to a decent crowd and we got a hefty pit going throughout. We'd like to say thanks to all our great fans for suppoting us so well despite the long wait. Our set started with Out of Reach as usual, but saw the introduction of backing vocals into our performance. This worked to great effect, with Andy singing and sharing the screaming with Titch. We were hoping to get John screaming too but he got a throat infection a week before the gig, but eventually we want to have John and Titch doing backup vocals. The new songs This Twisted Dream and Mini Cheddars went very well, and are likely to become regular live numbers in the future, as did Crash and Burn and Truth and Lies. Throughout the set we had problems with the guitars; Brownie's bass went out of tune and there was way too much feedback from Richy's guitar, but the drums sound was great (which nearly made up for the fact that it didn't have a second tom). Awake was as strong as ever, especially with the new live addition of a drum interlude into the second verse, which finished off our set well. Finally, we'd like to give a special mention to From Grace, who played a blinding set and entertained the crowd with lively banter in between songs.
We were last on of 5 bands that night:
The Retakes Committee
: These guys had a pretty long set, which was about 12 songs I think and meant it got a little tiresome towards the end. Nevertheless, they played some solid pop punk and my sister thought they were great - The Retakes Official Site.
Half Inch Heroes: HiH are a great ska band who have supported bands like Jesse James and Hiding With Girls, and they probably should have been higher up the bill. They had a good set considering they hadn't played together for 3 months, their highlight being 'Any Other Name' which is truely a super gnarly track (available to download from the Official Site).
From Grace: Our great friends From Grace stormed onstage and immediatley started up the crowd which had previously remained fairly static. They played an energetic metal/emo set which worked amazingly well, and despite the shortness of their set, they were one of the best bands of the night. We should be doing many more gigs with them in the future.
Paid to Smile: P2$ had a 30 minute setlist including some covers and some original material. They played some high quality pop-punk and entertained the crowd with covers of Tsunami Bomb, Greenday, and even a festive rendition of Jingle Bells. Good luck with the new line up by the way.
